Native Canadian Art – Maple Fest / Festival des Sucres

By February 28, 2019Uncategorized

This coming weekend is the Maple Festival des Sucres, on March 2nd & 3rd at Heritage Park, 1900 Heritage Drive SW, in Calgary. This festival is a celebration of French Canadian, Métis and First Nations culture and aims to share some of their traditions and culture.

This festival is produced by the Association canadienne-française de l’Alberta’s Calgary chapter. In the Calgary area, these lands are the traditional territory of the Blackfoot. They are the Treaty 7 lands of the Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina First Nations. It is also home to the Metis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

Our Mission

Colouring It Forward (CIF) is an indigenous social entreprise designed to create conversation, develop understanding and foster reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. CIF’s mission is to showcase the beautiful Native Canadian artwork and wisdom while giving back to the community. It is a way to help people reconnect with their roots, participate in reconciliation and build a brighter future together.

Art and Languages are important

Sharing culture can be really fun. CIF is partnering with Blackfoot artist Kalum Teke Dan to offer art and language activities to festival goers. At our booth, you will have the chance to learn some words in Treaty 7 languages (Blackfoot, Tsuut’ina, Stoney and Michif) and learn a bit about the Treaty 7 territory we live in. We will also have materials for you to make a small Indigenous inspired painting with our help if you need it. You will have some of Kalum’s artwork to get inspiration as well as have the opportunity to purchase some if you like.

French language book

Colouring It Forward’s founder Diana Frost is French Canadian as well as an Algonquin Métis. It is important to her to offer materials in French as well as in English. The first two colouring books on the Blackfoot and Dene have been translated. They are available for purchase during the festival as well as in our online store
